Increasing importance of soft skills
Moving up the career ladder from a functional into a management role requires a whole new skill set. It is not anymore the technical know-how that will make a manager successful but the leadership skills, or soft skills, that will allow her or him to excel in the role.
A study of the Center for Creative Leadership has identified seven competencies as most critical for success, now and in the future:
1. Leading people
2. Strategic planning
3. Managing change
4. Inspiring commitment
6. Doing whatever it takes
7. Being a quick learner
In the future, participative management is added to the top list as well, indicating that leaders will increasingly rely on collaboration to get the job done.
MEP is designed to prepare managers and develop those skills with them.
